OPEN POSITIONS
Part-time Technical Graphic Design Internship - (posted on 05/10/2012)
Air Sciences Inc., an equal opportunity employer, has an immediate opening for a summer internship in the Portland, Oregon office. We are seeking a creative, motivated individual with technical graphic design skills to support the in-house technical writer and staff (including scientists, engineers, and project managers) by offering suggestions for improving graphical elements of complex scientific documents. Materials generally cover air quality science and applicability of air quality regulations for permitting and compliance purposes. The position involves assisting in the development, editing, and standardization of graphical materials (e.g., tables, charts, diagrams, plots, timelines, and maps), and recommending appropriate software programs that would work best for particular scientific graphic design and presentation needs.
The primary focus of this internship is on providing a clear visual representation of scientific content to a wide range of audiences, such as internal staff, private industry and government clients, and regulatory agency personnel. Other duties may include assisting with updating the company website and writing/editing web content. Excellent communication skills are necessary, as well as the ability to grasp new terminology and technical concepts quickly, and to work effectively both in a collaborative team environment and independently. There will be an opportunity to create and present a final portfolio of graphical concepts to the team at the end of the internship. Candidates should be adept in Microsoft Office applications and comfortable working in both PC and Mac environments.

Air Sciences Inc., an equal opportunity employer, has an immediate opening for an environmental scientist/engineer in the Portland, Oregon office. The applicant must be a highly motivated individual with a BS or MS degree in a scientific or environmental engineering field and two+ years of experience working as a professional in a consulting firm, industry, or a regulatory agency. Experience in the field of air quality is preferred, but not required.
Responsibilities will include supporting the processing and (statistical) analysis and interpretation of environmental data; conducting data quality assurance/quality control reviews; and drafting technical reports. High proficiency with Microsoft software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Other essential skills include the ability to work independently, to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing), and to consistently produce an accurate and high-quality technical product. The successful candidate will bring creative solutions and strong critical thinking skills to data analysis challenges. Basic knowledge of statistical analyses graphical software (for example, SYSTAT) is required.
Experience in programming (for example in R) is a plus. We are seeking a person with superior technical skills who accepts and meets challenges in growing professionally, can handle responsibility, and excels in working in a team environment.

Air Sciences Inc., an equal opportunity employer, has an immediate opening for an air quality modeler/scientist in our Portland, Oregon office. We are seeking a professional with at least a BS degree in a scientific or engineering field and with work experience as an air quality professional for an environmental consulting firm, industry, or regulatory agency. The applicant must be a highly motivated individual with strong computer skills and a familiarity with atmospheric processes. Tasks will include setting up, troubleshooting, and running numerous air quality dispersion models; processing meteorological data; analyzing and interpreting environmental data; developing spreadsheets and database applications; drafting technical documents; and supporting air quality planning and permitting projects. Experience with regulatory dispersion models (e.g., AERMOD, CALPUFF) is required, and familiarity with state and federal air regulations and stationary source permitting, including PSD, is preferred. Experience with computer programming (VBA, Python, Fortran), GIS, and other data analysis packages (R, MATLAB) is a plus. Experience working with photochemical grid models such as CMAQ and CAMx is also a plus. High proficiency with Microsoft software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Other essential skills include the ability to work independently, to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing), and to consistently produce an accurate and high-quality technical product.
