Visibility Monitoring
Air Sciences set up the only non-government IMPROVE
network look-alike station. It is also the only solar-powered
station in the entire network. IMPROVE stands for Interagency
Monitoring for the PROtection of Visible Environments.
The monitoring includes:
- Visual range (24-hour integrated) by IMPROVE II
methods. This is a 4 module system which measures
various aerosols including PM2.5,
PM10, elements, ions (Cl-,
NO3-, SO42-),
and carbon (both elemental and total organic).
- Visual range (instantaneous) by nephalometry - Optec
NGN-2.
- Photographic documentation of scene by digital camera.
Automated shots 4 times a day.
- Wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and relative
humidity.
The equipment at this site is designed to monitor visibility
equivalent to the IMPROVE network. The data will be
used to monitor visibility trends and may be incorporated
into the Regional Haze Program.
